About the artist

john beamish

Born in Toronto and now located in Calgary, John has been involved in craft work for many years starting at St. Lawrence College in Kingston ON learning silver jewelry and eventually assisting in teaching various procedures. From there he went on to stained glass, learning the craft in Tucson AZ, and eventually assisting teaching there as well.

In 2019 he decided to change to a different medium: Hand carved wood pieces such as spoons, scoops, cheese knives spreaders, small carved figures and Christmas tree decorations.

John also has a continuing interest in ham radio (VE6HY), music (piano, trombone and banjo uke) and technical analysis of stocks on the TSE.

  • the process

To create his pieces, John starts with a block of wood and with a variety of knives, chisels and gouges and works the wood to the desired configuration. It is then sanded using up to 6 different grits until a perfectly smooth finish is obtained. If the item is going to be used with food, several applications of a food safe finish are applied, usually mineral oil. Depending on the item, acrylic paint may also be used enhance the figures. Laminations of various kinds of wood are also used as well as other decorative processes such as inlaid turquoise and chip carving.
