The artist

hellen beamish

Born and currently living in Calgary, Hellen has had a lifetime of experience honing her artistic talents from the Rocky Mountains to the beautiful 1000 Islands area of the St. Lawrence River, including art studies in Montreal, Kingston, Brockville and ACAD here in Calgary. Hellen has been working with textiles for many years and is well-known for her painted silk clothing, accessories and wall hangings. However , today she is totally immersed in designing fused / slumped glass creating functional glass dishes, wall art pieces , lanterns as well as Christmas decor.

  • the process

The process of creating fused / slumped glass art begins by cutting glass of different colours into various and exacting shapes and placing them on a glass base which is then put into a kiln at high heat. The glass pieces then soften and melt together resulting in a flat sheet. Then this flat piece is laid on a mold and again placed in the kiln but only heated sufficiently to allow the glass to soften and assume the shape of the mold. This process is called “ Slumping. “
